Kamala Harris: The First Female Vice President of the United States
Early Life and Career
Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. She earned a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and began her legal career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
Political Career
Harris entered politics as District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003. She was the first African American and first woman to hold the position. In 2010, she was elected California's Attorney General, becoming the first African American and the first female to serve in that role as well.
In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate, representing California. She became the second African American woman to serve in the Senate.
Vice Presidency
In 2020, Harris was chosen as the Democratic vice presidential nominee alongside Joe Biden. They were elected in the 2020 presidential election, making Harris the first female Vice President of the United States.
As Vice President, Harris has focused on addressing issues such as racial justice, climate change, and healthcare. She has also played a key role in the Biden administration's efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
