Portugal Begin Euro 2024 Campaign with 2-0 Win Over Czech Republic
Goals from João Cancelo and Gonçalo Guedes secure victory in Leipzig
Portugal got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Czech Republic at Leipzig's Red Bull Arena on Tuesday.
João Cancelo opened the scoring for Portugal in the 33rd minute, with Gonçalo Guedes doubling their lead five minutes later. The result leaves Portugal top of Group F after the first round of matches, while Czech Republic are bottom.
Portugal began the match brightly and came close to taking the lead in the 10th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo's shot was saved by Czech Republic goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík. However, Portugal did not have to wait long for the opening goal, as Cancelo fired home from close range after a cross from Bernardo Silva.
Portugal continued to dominate the match after the break and Guedes made it 2-0 in the 38th minute with a fine finish from outside the area. Czech Republic had few chances to get back into the game and Portugal could have added to their lead in the second half, with Ronaldo and Guedes both going close.
The victory is a great start for Portugal, who will now be confident of reaching the knockout stages. Czech Republic, on the other hand, will need to improve if they want to qualify for the next round.
