Europe Adopts Landmark AI Regulation

Council Approves Groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence Act

AI Use in EU to Be Governed by Harmonized Rules

The European Union has taken a significant step towards regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) within its borders. On Wednesday, the Council approved the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), which sets out harmonized rules for the development and deployment of AI systems.

The AI Act is the first binding worldwide horizontal regulation on AI. It aims to foster safe and trustworthy AI development while also protecting fundamental rights and freedoms. The regulation covers a wide range of AI applications, including those used in healthcare, law enforcement, and autonomous driving.

The AI Act has been in the works for several years. It was first proposed by the European Commission in April 2021. Since then, it has been subject to extensive negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council, and the Commission.

The final version of the AI Act includes a number of key provisions. It establishes a risk-based approach to AI regulation, with higher-risk applications subject to more stringent requirements. The AI Act also sets out rules for the use of AI in public services, including requirements for transparency and accountability.

The AI Act is a significant milestone in the EU's efforts to regulate AI. It is expected to have a major impact on the development and deployment of AI systems within the EU.
