Gaza conflict: Israel intensifies Rafah offensive
Israeli forces have reached the centre of the southern Gaza city of Rafah and seized a strategically important building, according to Palestinian security sources.
The Israeli military ordered an estimated 100,000 residents of eastern Rafah to evacuate their homes earlier on Wednesday.
The Israeli military said it had killed 14 militants in a series of air strikes on Rafah on Wednesday morning. Palestinian medics said at least 20 people had been killed in the strikes.
The United States does not believe Israel has launched a full-scale invasion of Rafah, the White House said on Wednesday.
The Israeli military said its forces had entered Rafah to target militants who were firing rockets at Israel.
Palestinians in Rafah said Israeli shelling was continuing, and that they were terrified about the prospect of an invasion.
A Palestinian doctor in Rafah said people were searching for food among burnt debris.
